Focusing on the later years in the life of Jeffrey Dahmer ( Jeremy Renner), David Jacobson's film follows the troubled killer from department store to gay nightclub as he stalks his prey and battles his inner demons, all the while providing contrast to current events with flashbacks from the days during which madness finally gained an inescapable grip on his already unstable mind.

Then we cut away to him going to his locker, human remains stored in there as if they were his spare set of clothes or just little trinkets.A low-key glimpse into the life and crimes of one of history's most notorious serial killers, Dahmer doesn't concern itself with the gruesome nature of its protagonist's horrific crimes, but rather the troubled mind of the man who committed them. The blank look on his face shows us a man who is used to being alone socially sure, but he's done horrible things that probably stay in his mind above everything else. Notice how he sat alone, he didn't really look around for anyone to sit with either. My absolute favorite scene however is the one where Dahmer is on his lunch break, it just said so much about who he was. To me it shows that no matter what he'd always murder anyone close to him like that, to further reiterate that he still wasn't completely right in his mind at the end of the day. My other favorite is the part where Rodney and Dahmer embrace, and Dahmer goes back into kill mode. I personally think it's really debatable if he really did cry like he did in the movie, but it still really broke my heart a little when I first saw it. I love the scene where Dahmer comes home after his first murder. Those are all some really great scenes! I never really thought about how strained Dahmer's relationship with his father could have really been, never crossed my mind to question it. Plus, the song that starts playing is really haunting.

To me, it symbolizes Dahmer's isolation from the rest of society and his choice to continue on the path he'd started for himself when he killed his first victim. My absolute favorite scene, though, would have to be at the very end in that flashback when his father drops eighteen-year-old Dahmer off to see some therapist/psychiatrist and he just walks out of the building and off into the woods. The part where he says something like, "You try to act all sweet and innocent, but it's only to cover up how you want to kill people" was especially chilling. I also really like the scenes when Dahmer is arguing with/kind-of "seducing" Rodney while simultaneously confiding in him and hinting about who he truly is. There's no way that there wasn't some sort of strain in there. Lionel Dahmer was a Lutheran and academically successful chemist. Dahmer was a gay alcoholic, loner, and general failure. Love the illustration of the relationship between Dahmer and his father, which I've always believed was a little more difficult than what either admitted in interviews.
